Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration!

Posted October 13, 2023

DCIS held our Second Annual Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration on October 17th! Our DCIS team has worked very hard to prepare this whole day experience for our students with workshops and cultural experiences.

Workshops included:

  • Traditional Oral Histories
  • Transform Columbus Day Movement of Denver, Colorado
  • Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women
  • Native American Boarding School System
  • Christopher Columbus and the Atrocities done to Indigenous Peoples

We had the incredible opportunity to listen to speakers from the Transform Columbus Day Movement and watch performances by Grupo Tlaloc and a drum group.

Grupo Tlaloc

Based out of Denver Colorado, GRUPO TLALOC Danza Azteca is a traditional Mexica/Azteca group embodied of Chicano/Mexicano families and students of all ages dedicated to preserving and nourishing the ancient knowledge of their ancestors. They have pledged to uphold and walk a spiritual way of life and have committed themselves to help educate the public’s view of the Aztec culture.

Tlaloc means; He who fertilizes the Earth. Liquor of the Earth. He is the rain, which makes things grow.

Speakers from the Transform Columbus Day Movement explained the history of this day in Colorado and why it is so important to recognize October 9th as Indigenous Peoples Day. Professor Glenn Morris, on the left, is a Professor of Political Science at UCD and a member of Colorado American Indian Movement (AIM). A member of our very own DCIS family, Adrienne Benavidez, is a former member of the Colorado House of Representatives. Adrienne is also the mother of DCIS educator and Indigenous Team Lead Isabel Barajas de Benavidez. She provided her perspective as a CO State Representative and a member of the Transform Columbus Day Movement.
