FAQ’s

We are not available on the days that some of these are offered. Can we schedule on a different day?

Please reach out to our school communications specialist, elise_koehl@dpsk12.net, and we’d be happy to work together in finding a time that works best for everyone! If possible, please include a preferred time and date in the email.

Can we sign up for more than one?

Yes! Families tend to start with an Open House or a School Tour, but if you feel confident and want to try out multiple options we are more than happy to schedule any opportunity for you to visit our campus!

Can my child study more than one world language at a time?

Yes, your child can study multiple languages if that is a passion area for them. Usually, this means one less elective class.

Does DCIS have sports?

Yes, we have the full slate of middle school athletics including boys flag football, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball, and boys and girls basketball. Recently, we were approved by DPS athletics to have high school sports beginning in 2024 through the Colorado High School Athletics Association. We plan to have boys and girls cross country and at least two other sports that are currently being determined in collaboration with DPS and our DCIS community.

What other extracurriculars does DCIS offer?

We offer a thriving Drama/Theater program, with three productions per year that involve approximately 60 students grades 6-12. We also offer over 20 clubs, that range from identity clubs to action-based sports clubs, to art clubs. DCIS is starting the first lacrosse club and will transition to a full sports team next year.

What makes DCIS an international school?

We have a focus on travel opportunities, both domestic/local and international, as avenues for learning for our students. We have a Travel Center at DCIS, an Assistant Principal dedicated to coordinating travel opportunities, and a strong partnership with our sister non-profit organization the DCIS Foundation. Recent trips have included Paris, service-learning in Colombia, New York City and the American Exchange Project. Trips planned for 2024 include service-learning in Costa Rica and a Japan trip. Students in grades 6-12 are supported in developing these trips and making them happen!

What does a “magnet” school mean?

DCIS was originally founded as a magnet school, with the vision of drawing students from all over the city and an application-based admission system. While we no longer carry forward with an application-based system as it does not align with our district value of equity, we do hold tight to the value of a magnet program that draws students from all over our city. We believe that the unique nature of the DCIS programming, including the DCIS Diploma is integral to who we are as a school.

What kind of transportation is provided to DCIS?

We have four district busses that serve the West portions of Denver for middle school students and students with severe special needs. We also operate a small activity bus that seats twelve students. We prioritize middle school students from the Central and East sides of the city for this bus and look at family-based need along with a lottery system to determine who gets seats on that bus each year.

What are your school hours?

Due to DPS Healthy Start Times, our 2023-24 school start time will be 8:25 AM and dismissal at 3:25 PM. We follow the standard DPS calendar.

Is DCIS a charter school?

No, we are not a charter nor an innovation school. We are a traditional district-run school.

What is the school’s performance rating?

We are a “GREEN” Performance rated school for two years in a row, the highest rating available from the Colorado Department of Education.
