Today, with the historic significance of the guilty verdicts in the George Floyd murder brings up a range of emotions. At DCIS, we acknowledge the justice this represents and stand with the message that Black Lives Matter, and the life of George Floyd mattered. Our mental health team will be hosting the google meet meet.google.com/lookup/dcissupport from 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM tomorrow April 21st.

Our educators will be giving space for students to talk about the verdict during Advisement, and possibly other classes. Students will be supported in choosing to share or choosing to remain silent on the subject. The goal is to provide processing time for our students in light of this historical moment in our country.

On a personal note, as the mother of a Black/Latinx/White son who presents to the world as a Black boy, I breathed deeply when this verdict was announced. Not because American historical racism is reversed by this case, but because a strong step is being taken that values my son’s life. As the daughter of a Denver Policeman, I know how challenging it is to change the entrenched culture in any police department. Accountability is a positive foundation for any change to occur.

Be well,
